Low mood, exhaustion, and a loss of motivation that rest does not seem to touch.
Depression is often described as sadness, but that is rarely how it is lived. More often it is flatness — the sense that things which used to matter no longer register, and that everything costs more effort than it should.
It is also convincing. Depression tends to present its own account of you as simple fact. A large part of the work is learning to recognise that voice as a symptom rather than a verdict.
We start small and concrete, because depression makes large plans impossible. CBT addresses the thinking patterns that keep low mood in place, while DBT skills help with regulation and follow-through. Progress is usually gradual and uneven — that is normal, not failure.
